How to use this tool

Enter the net estate value — what's left after paying off debts, funeral expenses, and any valid one-third bequest to a non-heir. Then select which heirs survived the deceased and how many of each. Leave the estate value blank if you only want the fractions/percentages. Select "Calculate shares" to see the breakdown.

About this calculation

This calculator applies the fixed shares (fara'id) set out in the Quran for spouse, parents, and children, the residuary ('asabah) rules for sons, daughters, and full siblings, and the standard blocking (hajb) rules — e.g. a father or a son excludes full siblings from inheriting; a father or child reduces the mother's share from 1/3 to 1/6; the well-known "gharrawayn"/"umariyyatain" case (spouse + both parents, no children, no siblings) is applied, giving the mother 1/3 of what remains after the spouse's share rather than 1/3 of the whole estate.

Supported heirs only: husband, wife/wives, father, mother, sons, daughters, full brothers, and full sisters. It does not handle grandparents, grandchildren, half-siblings (paternal or maternal), or other relatives (uncles, aunts, cousins) — if any of those survive alongside or instead of the heirs above, the shares shown here will not be complete or correct, and you should consult a qualified Islamic scholar or faraid specialist.

Where jurists differ (chiefly on radd), this tool follows the majority Maliki/Shafi'i/Hanbali position that a surviving spouse's share does not increase through radd; the Hanafi school allows the spouse to share in radd when no other relative-heir remains, which would change the result in that specific edge case.

Frequently asked questions

What is Faraid (Islamic inheritance)?

Faraid is the Islamic system of fixed inheritance shares set out in the Quran (mainly 4:11, 4:12, and 4:176), which specifies exactly what fraction of an estate each close relative receives after debts and funeral costs are paid and any valid will (up to one-third of the estate, only for non-heirs) is honored.

Which heirs does this calculator support?

Spouse (husband, or one or more wives), father, mother, sons, daughters, and full brothers/sisters (same father and mother). It does not calculate shares for grandparents, grandchildren, half-siblings, aunts, uncles, or other relatives — for estates involving those relations, consult a qualified Islamic scholar or a faraid specialist.

What is awl (increase) and radd (return)?

Awl happens when the fixed shares of the heirs add up to more than the whole estate; every share is then reduced proportionally so they add up to exactly 100%. Radd happens when fixed shares add up to less than the whole estate and there is no residuary heir to take the rest; the leftover is then returned proportionally to the fixed-share heirs (other than the spouse, per the majority Maliki/Shafi'i/Hanbali position used here).

Does this calculator account for debts, funeral costs, and wills?

No. Enter only the net estate value that remains after outstanding debts, funeral expenses, and any valid bequest (wasiyyah, capped at one-third of the estate and only to non-heirs) have already been deducted.

Is this a legal or religious ruling (fatwa)?

No. This tool applies well-established Sunni Faraid rules for the supported heirs and is for educational and planning purposes only. For an actual estate distribution, consult a qualified Islamic scholar and, where relevant, a lawyer familiar with your country's inheritance law.
